Redux for Beginners The Brain-Friendly Guide to Learning Redux

Just like you follow a process to withdraw money from your bank, Redux also follows a process to change/update the state of your application. The type field should be a string that gives this action a descriptive name, like “todos/todoAdded”. Redux can integrate with any UI framework, and is most frequently used with React. React-Redux is our official package that lets your React components interact with a Redux store by reading pieces of state and dispatching actions to update the store. Redux guides you towards writing code that is predictable and testable, which helps give you confidence that your application will work as expected.

  • Remember to return new state objects, instead of mutating the previous state.
  • React Redux is a state management library for React applications.
  • This ensures that neither the views nor the network callbacks will ever write directly to the state.
  • We will talk about changing/updating the state later in this blog.

When our action is dispatched we’ll send the ID of the todo that was clicked, and then filter this TODO out of the current list in state. So if you have multiple slices of state, this will return the whole thing. This lets us do pretty cool things – for example if we wanted to get a specific todo, or filter the list, we can do this here in this function. The state value that gets passed in to the useSelector hook function is the entire state tree that is stored in Redux. The useSelector hook accepts a function, and returns us the data based on that function. Now if we try this, nothing happens in our UI because we haven’t updated the TodoList to pull data from Redux, which we’ll do in a second.

Adding selectors to your slices

It’s a trade-off between short term and long term productivity. This tutorial will introduce you to Redux and teach you how to use it the right way, using our latest recommended tools and best practices. By the time you finish, you should be able to start building your own Redux applications using the tools and patterns you’ve learned here. If you are already using Redux, it’s time to move to Redux Toolkit, as it’s now the official way to use Redux. You can continue to use vanilla Redux as you migrate to RTK one slice at a time.

What are the features of Redux

Use the filter function to get all the todos that do not equal the ID in the payload (line 26). We have to return this since the filter function gives us a new array back. Next, we create a click handler function called handleCompleteClick (line 8).

How to Add the Reducers to the Store

If we talk about our bank case scenario then you will notice that things are organized in their own place. For example, the cashier sits in their own cubicle/office and the vault is safe in separate secure rooms. Prior to RTK, developers had to manually wire up Redux stores using a lot of boilerplate code. This included setting up reducers, actions, selectors, actions, and middleware just to get a basic store running. RTK handles these painful tasks by providing a set of utility functions that simplify the standard way you’d use Redux.

We’ll call the dispatch function, and pass in the action we want to dispatch (line 9). Now that we have our reducer we need to implement the logic to update the state (line 22). Remember that the store holds all our reducers and manages them for us.

Create the reducer

The reducer in Redux is a normal, pure function that takes care of the various possible values of state using the switch case syntax. But that means several things need to be taken care of — most importantly, keeping the state immutable. 💡 store refers to the object that holds the application data shared between components. Most libraries, such as React and Angular, are built with a way for components to internally manage their state without the need for an external library or tool.

What are the features of Redux

With Redux, you can persist some of the app’s state to localStorage and restore it after a refresh. We’ll be implementing a similar example to the login component above but this time in Redux. As we mentioned earlier, Redux is a standalone library that can be used with different JavaScript frameworks including Angular, Inferno, Vue, Preact, React, etc.

Redux

That means data cannot be sent from a child to a parent; it has to flow downward from the parent to the child. This thought model works very well with Redux where we cannot directly modify the state. Instead, we dispatch actions that intend to change the state, and then separately, we observe the resulting state changes. If the data needs to be passed from a parent to a child deep down the tree, this can still be accomplished using React utilities like Context.

If you feel middleware is required, you will appreciate its capacity to enable great work with the best abstraction. Hence, if the initial state was 12, after the action to increment it by five gets dispatched and processed, we get the new value of the state, i.e., 17. Remember, this data is not needed by the parent component, but because its children what is redux need to share data, it has to provide a state. In an app where data is shared among components, it might be confusing to actually know where a state should live. Ideally, the data in a component should live in just one component, so sharing data among sibling components becomes difficult. One to practice yourself is to delete the todo via the API!

What is Redux Toolkit?

So in the above example, we first make a copy of the entire state using the spread operator …state. Then we increment the noOfItemInCart by 1, update the cart array by adding the new object passed in the action.payload shown below, and then finally return the updated object. Whenever we dispatch an action with a certain type, we need to make sure to have appropriate reducers to handle that action. It is easy to test Redux apps because they rely on pure functions. This means tht tests can simply call a pure function with specific parameters and check if the return value matches the expected result. There are three core components in Redux — actions, store, and reducers.

The above object is an action in the Redux application that has a type field describing the action you want to perform. So whenever you need to change/update the state of your Redux application, you need to dispatch an action. You visit the bank with action in your mind i.e WITHDRAW_MONEY. No one is going to give you money if you just roam around here and there. If you want to update the state of your Redux (like you do with setState in React) you need to let Redux know about your action.

That is the reason we have defined all three actions with the same type of field. Treat them like customers in a bank with the same intent/action of depositing money (type) but different amounts (text). In the same way, when you create a Redux Store you do a similar kind of initial deposit which is known as initialState. We will represent this initialState as a second argument passed into the createStore. “Reducer” functions get their name because they’re similar to the kind of callback function you pass to the Array.reduce() method. React Redux is a state management library for React applications.
